A 전성 어미 that converts a 용언 (verb) to a 명사 (noun).

There are two:

• 기
• ㅁ, 음

Note, using a common noun such as 것, you can use a 관형사형 전성 어미 to create a noun.

• 공부하는 것

studying (lit. the thing that studies)

Also, note that many verbs can be changed into nouns simply by dropping 하다.
