() Instead

I. 하:타

1. Acting in place of.
2. Exchanging with something else.
The verb form takes an -를 Object Marker that is the thing you are replacing or acting in stead of, and the -가 Subject Marker is used for the thing taking its place.
It's not often you see this as the principle verb in the sentence. You commonly see this in one of two ways:
  • With the -에 marker:
대신에 먹다.
To eat bread instead of rice.
  • As a verb with the Non-final -어 ending:
아버지대신하여 내가 참속겠다.
I'll go instead of my father.

II. Substituting for something or acting in place of.

This form looks deceptively like the speaker is lazy and simply wants to drop the -에 or 하여 ending. It's not that: This is legitimately an adverb (부사) in its own right.
네가 대신 거라.
You go instead.
'대신 어라.
Wear this clothing 'instead.
